The Virus

It feels surreal
From my tower of privilege
Scrolling through a mix of
fake news and real knowledge

It seems like fiction
From this vantage point of security
Feels like a cloudy dream
Far off from reality

Yet there are thousands
in the front lines of this war
Fighting an invisible enemy
No guns, no gore

Is it even real?
Can’t see, or smell, or hear
Inconspicuous, but violent
And I can feel the fear

I’m safe in my little bird cage
I’m doing as I’m told
I wait, holding my breath
For the chaos to unfold

I know I’m not invincible
“It won’t happen to me”
Not making that mistake again
It can be anybody

It’s only a matter of time
Till it’s someone you know
The nightmare has come alive
It’s not a dream anymore.
